Google to shut down Hangouts in November and migrate users to Chat

Hangouts will be officially discontinued in November 2022, and Google is working to move the remaining users to Chat.

Google Chat replaced Hangouts for Workspace users in February 2022.

Here's what we know about Google's migration to Chat from Hangouts

Google Chat Product Manager Ravi Kanneganti stated in a blog post dated June 27 that users of Hangouts on mobile would now get a notification on an in-app screen urging them to switch to Chat in Gmail or the Chat app.

Those who use the Hangouts Chrome extension will be prompted to switch to Chat on the web or install the Chat web app. In addition, in July, Gmail Hangouts will be updated to Chat.

"While we urge everyone to use Chat, Hangouts on the web will remain available until later this year." "At least a month before the web Hangouts starts diverting to Chat on the web, users will get an in-product warning," Kanneganti stated.

Conversations on Hangouts will be automatically moved to Chat. However, Google advises users to get a copy of their Hangouts data using Google Takeout before the service closes in November.

What is Google Chat?

The firm discontinued GChat (or Google Talk) earlier this month. Instead, hangouts, the successor of GChat, was introduced in 2013. This is the new move by Google to integrate instant messaging services throughout its products.

In 2020, it was made available to everybody. Its features include Spaces where people may collaborate on specific topics. In addition, through the new integrated view, Chat may be utilised alongside Gmail inbox, Spaces, and Meet.

Google has "huge goals for the future of Chat," according to Kanneganti.

"There will be even more features, such as direct calling, in-line threading in Spaces, and the ability to share and see numerous photographs," Kanneganti promised.
