Snapchat paid subscription offers more features for power users.

This week, Snap will launch Snapchat Plus, an optional subscription that enables early access and unique features.

According to the company's SVP of Product, Jacob Andreou, the $3.99 monthly membership is aimed at "the folks who spend most of their time interacting with their closest friends on Snap." It's Snap's first significant effort to generate income outside of advertising. Still, Andreou claims there are no hopes for Plus to develop into a "substantial new revenue source."

It makes sense to question whether Snap intends to charge users to turn off adverts in the app after adding a premium tier. According to Andreou, "ads are going to be at the centre of our economic strategy for the long run," .which downplays the likelihood. Snap still sees a chance to broaden its sources of income, though. Subscriptions are a logical area to investigate since its hardware business hasn't and probably won't be significant for the foreseeable future.
